Experience and Aim

Dr. A. Shahina is a professor in the department of Information Technology at SSN. She has 14 years of teaching and research experience, with over 5 years of research exclusively in the field of Speech Processing, one of the widely growing and popular research areas. She aims to develop speech based clinical applications, and technologies for viable biometric person authentication systems through sustained research.

Education

Shahina obtained her PhD from the department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT-Madras, India. She also has an M.Tech from IIT-Madras and a B.E from Govt. College of Engineering, Salem. She has worked as a project officer for a DRDO-sponsored project at IIT-Madras.

Research Interests

Shahina has research interests in the areas of Speech Processing (using alternate anatomical speech sensors), Speech Applications, Man-Machine Interface, Pattern Recognition (especially of physiological signals) etc. Prior to joining SSN, Shahina has incorporated novel approaches to improve the perceptual quality of speech from alternate speech sensors. She has exploited this speech for developing robust speech systems in adverse environments. She has also proposed a novel approach for loudness enhancement of soft voices by manipulating the speech signal.

Research Projects

  1. Development of Text to Speech (TTS) System in Tamil, a DIT sponsored project worth 77 lakhs. Project Coordinators: Dr. T. Nagarajan (PC), Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi and Dr. A. Shahina.
  2. Development of Speech Corpus Using Alternate Speech Sensors, an SSN sponsored project, worth 1.23 lakhs. Coordinators: Dr. A. Shahina, Dr. T. Nagarajan and Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi.

Teaching Interests

Computer Architecture, Pattern Recognition, Information Theory and Coding, Speech and Image Processing.

PhD Students

Shahina is a registered research supervisor at Anna University, Chennai. Currently, there are 2 PhD research scholars working in the areas of multimodal speech recognition, and processing speech in noisy environments.

Publications

She has 17 research publications, including in refereed international journals and international conferences.
